May 11

Student passports are done en masse when the parents come for the first meeting. The school photographer takes the special-sized pictures, the parents fill out the necessary citizen and non-citizen papers, and add money or a check. I take the papers and pictures to the post office the next day. This action also sets up the list of students who are really going to travel; with the first step already taken care of early, other students stop by for the paperwork and directions as soon as the passports arrive. Copies are also made for me when the passports arrive and students receive their first travel item - a book for their addresses with a pen donated by a local stationary company. Once that happens, other students start getting interested and attend meetings, fundraising for that year or the next.
