netc sponsored peruvian soccer teamTouring Peru with NETC, students and teachers always feel the warm welcome and generous spirit of the Peruvian people. Many are inspired to look for ways to reciprocate, especially to those Peruvians in need. English teacher Sherry Grutzius and students of Morgan Park Academy in Chicago have donated 922 pounds of supplies toAldeas Infantiles. NETC and Mercury Shipping Company took care of shipping the materials, which included notebooks, writing utensils, books, flashcards and arts and crafts materials, as well as musical instruments and sporting equipment. Often taken for granted in America, these supplies are more difficult for schools in developing countries to acquire. Recently, this same group of students had the opportunity to travel on an NETC tour to Peru and meet the children in this orphanage.

Before their NETC Educational Tour, students of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, and group leader Kevan Sano-O'Brien (featured in the May 2008 edition of The Educated Traveler) donated 80 care packages and three laptops to the school they visited on their tour in Peru. Kevan recalls her time at the school as "the most memorable experience in Peru." She has since created a community project, Classroom to Classroom, to coordinate donations of materials and supplies to Peruvian schools. The program involves students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and has already become a huge success. Just last month, Kevan and her students traveled to Peru, carrying with them a remarkable 38 suitcases filled to the brim with materials and supplies for the school.

If you have the opportunity to experience one of NETC's Peru tours, you will meet the wonderful students in Pisac during a Peruvian School Visit. When we asked what NETC could do to help the school, they asked for team uniforms. We were pleased to be able to provide the uniforms and had fun designing unique soccer shirts for the students (pictured above). This small act meant very much to the school and the team, as they hadn't had soccer uniforms in the past. Being able to help and see the smiling faces of the Pisac soccer team in exchange was extremely rewarding for us.
