If you're planning a visit to Edinburgh this summer, attend a performance at the Edinburgh International Festival, which takes place August 14th through September 6th this year. The annual festival is a three-week celebration of the arts - theatre, opera, classical music and dance - with top performers of the world personally invited by the Festival's General Director to perform at the event. Performances are held in major theatres and concert halls, including Usher Hall, Festival Theatre, Edinburgh Playhouse, King's Theatre, Royal Lyceum Theatre, Queen's Hall and the Hub, as well as various smaller venues throughout the city. Visit The Festival's website for full program details, available March 25, 2009.

The Edinburgh Festival is now more popular than ever! Almost half a million people attended last year, arriving in Edinburgh from all over the world. Ticket sales for this record-breaking year totaled £2.63 million.

The original Edinburgh festival took place in 1947 to "enrich the cultural life of Scotland, Britain and Europe". At that same time, eight uninvited theater groups showed up at the festival to perform on their own. This number increased each year, and eventually became what is known as The Festival Fringe, or simply "The Fringe", which now takes place at the same time as the Edinburgh International Festival. The Fringe became so popular that the Festival Fringe Society was developed to promote the event, publish programs and sell tickets. This open arts festival features performances from big name showbiz personalities to street performers, covering comedy, children's shows, dance, theater, musicals, opera, exhibitions and events.
