1. A short walk from the Coliseum, you’ll find the Basilica di San Clemente. The basilica has three layers of history built one on top of the other: the present church with a beautiful mosaic above the apse, an older church and ancient place of worship, and a Mithraic Temple built in the 3rd century, complete with a Mithraic schoolroom.

2. Plan a picnic in the Villa Borghese Gardens. The park is a welcome contrast to the flurry of central Rome and a peaceful place to wander and people-watch.  Around the park, there are several historic buildings to see, as well as the Galleria Borghese museum. Evening concerts often take place in the gardens.

3. Enjoy a meal at Felice a Testaccio. You’ll rarely find tourists in this restaurant where you can try their Pasta al Felice – pasta with ricotta, tomatoes, mint and chili. It’s a delicious and inexpensive way to sample authentic Roman cuisine.

4. Visit Aventine Hill and enjoy its charming park, orange garden, and breathtaking views of Rome. Follow the Via di Santa Sabina and look for the green door. Take a peak through the ornate keyhole for a spectacular tree-framed view of Rome and St. Peter’s Basilica.

5. Walk down the narrow cobblestone streets of Trastevere, a district in Rome across the Tiber. While there, visit the Church of Santa Maria, one of the oldest in Rome, with its gold mosaics and frescoes.
