All travelers on
NETC tours to Berlin see the Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, the Reichstag, Pergamon Museum and the Berlin Wall Museum. So, for my top 5, I wanted to focus on some unique suggestions that are “off the beaten path”.
1. Check out the artistic expressions of graffiti artists from 21 countries at the
East Side Gallery. The graffiti paintings decorate the remains of the Berlin Wall.
2. Visit Berlin’s largest public park
Tiergarten. Up until the 18
th century the park was a royal hunting grounds. As you stroll through the park you’ll see it’s speckled with war memorials, victory statues and palaces.
3. Explore one of Berlin’s most prominent landmarks, the
Protestant Memorial Church. During WWII, air raids resulted in heavy damage to the church. As a result, a modern concrete church was built adjacent to the original, in which blue stained glass decorates the windows.
4. Uncover the history of Judaism at the
Jewish Museum. This art and cultural center is decorated in a contemporary metal and glass design, and features moving and interactive exhibits that let visitors discover the trials and tribulations of Holocaust victims.
5.
Alexanderplatz is the most famous square in Berlin and is referred to by the locals simply as “Alex”. The atmosphere is vibrant and urban and the architecture has some interesting Soviet era characteristics. The Fountain of International Friendship and the Berlin TV Tower are big attractions in the square as well.
