Central Edinburgh

Have you ever been to Edinburgh? The capital city of Scotland, home to the largest performing arts festival in the world and voted "most desirable city in which to live in the UK" in 2009, it's a wonderful place to visit. Here are my top 5 recommendations for Edinburgh:

1. Seated atop volcanic Castle Rock is famous Edinburgh Castle. Encompassing over one thousand years of history, it is one of Scotland’s most popular attractions. Learn castle secrets during a complimentary guided tour of significant castle attractions, including the Great Hall, Mons Meg, a 550 year old cannon, the National War Museum with over 400 years of military history,The Royal Palace, the Stone of Destiny and St. Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh.

2. From Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Abbey runs a stretch of streets known as the Royal Mile. Today this bustling area is full of tourist shops, pubs, and restaurants. It’s also home to many historical sites including the Heart of Midlothian, a heart shaped design in the street marking the previous entrance to the Tolbooth; St. Giles Cathedral, the City Church of Edinburgh with its distinct hollow-crown tower; and the historic John Knox House, home of the 16th century Protestant reformer.

3. Formed by an extinct volcano, Arthur’s Seat is the main focal point within Holyrood Park, located about one mile from Edinburgh Castle. Climb to the top and you’ll stand 823 feet above the city, enjoying spectacular views in every direction.

4. On Princes Street stands the gorgeous gothic Scott Monument, memorial to author Sir Walter Scott. Climb the spiral staircase 287 steps to the highest viewing deck and look out over the beautiful city.

5. Take a break from the city, and venture to Edinburgh’s coast and the beach of Portobello. Enjoy a leisurely stroll on the beach or on the mile-long stretch of promenade. There are several cafes and pubs where you can stop for a bite and a cold beverage.
