Haitian children during construction of the orphanage. MWTS Mission: Haiti
This week NETC’s Tim Sweeney is helping build a school in a small, rural village of Haiti. Many of the children who will eventually attend the school have sadly been orphaned or abandoned as a result of the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January 2010. The construction of the school marks phase II of the
Mission: Haiti project, which began with building an orphanage to shelter and support 100 neglected children.
When I spoke with Tim last week, he was looking forward to the opportunity to volunteer his time and support the inhabitants of this small rural community, located about 50 miles from Port-au-Prince. As a father of three, Tim anticipated that meeting and interacting with the children at the “Kay Mari Manman Tout Timoun,” orphanage would be one of the highlights of his service in Haiti. So much so, that he was worried he’d find it difficult to leave Haiti after undoubtedly forming bonds with the children there.
Tim will be volunteering with
MWTS in Haiti until March 19
th. You can look forward to a follow up post with photos from his trip after his return. If you have any specific questions for Tim, please leave a comment below and he’ll answer them in the post.
About MWTS Mission: Haiti
Mission: Haiti, is a program developed by youth minister, Sean Forrest, founder and president of Movin’ With The Spirit, Inc. (MWTS). Mission: Haiti “seeks to faithfully serve the many needs of the poor and strengthen the villages of Duverger and Dandann, Haiti, by building an orphanage, school and health clinic.”
Mission: Haiti consists of a four phase building plan. Phase I was an orphanage built to support 100 children and house up to 80 missionaries. The orphanage welcomed its first child, Mackendy on December 13, 2009. In phase II of the project a school serving grades 1-8 will be built, with eight classrooms, a computer lab and an auditorium that will function as both a cafeteria and a gymnasium. The 14,000 square foot school will utilize alternative energy and green systems as much as possible. In phase III, a health clinic will be built to provide care to families from nearby towns and villages. The final stage of the project will be to create a special needs home for orphaned or abandoned children.
