student tour photo finalist 2
Congratulations Jack McKenzie of Hamilton Wenham High School in MA!

We are proud to announce the winner of NETC's "Neil Travels the World" Photo Contest: Jack McKenzie for his photo "Neil Se Gusta Bailar." Jack has won $500 for himself and a $1,000 NETC Educational Travel Scholarship for his school.

In Jack's own words: "What I love about this photo is the symbolism it portrays. Neil, the mascot and symbol for NETC shows how the organization connects cultures from around the globe. He is the bridge between this school and Hamilton-Wenham, just like NETC."

Some of our favorite comments left by readers helped describe this amazing experience:

  • "I think this is a gem. It was amazing that this moment was captured. Not only is it a beautiful picture from an artist standpoint, but it represents so much. Like Jack said, it shows how NETC bridges cultures. Neil is the keystone of global connection. It is obvious that the two people beside Neil in this photo are of different races, but this doesn't matter. They are sharing a dance and crossing all human boundaries. I always used to say that the smallest distance between two people is a handshake, but after seeing this photo, I know that it is Neil. Great photo."  -M. Chigas

  • "Great picture that really shows the connection we were making with the students at the school. I don't think I will ever forget this experience."  -Jack L.

  • "This picture is a prime moment that shows how us as students really took in all that Peru had to offer, and with open arms embraced all of the Peruvian culture that the people loved to talk about."  -Trip M.

  • "This picture is just one of the countless bridges being built by NETC and Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School with other cultures each and every day. For these people to share a dance with Neil, and each other, means not only to feel a rhythm heard by those of another country, and it means more than to share a step with them. It means that for a short time, you are sharing a piece of life with someone from another place, another culture, and almost another world. This brief moment in life is like a shooting star; a quick, sudden flash of utter beauty and perfection, and quick as it may be to go, it means everything for the short time it is seen. And just the sight of it is enough to bring complete joy to one's heart."  -Kevin F.

  • "The bridge between the two worlds that this picture shows is amazing. Through NETC the HWRHS community has been able to bridge a gap with another country. I cannot express how much this picture represents how HWRHS fells about travel and the NETC's work."  -Matt L.

  • "This photo helps show the importance of these trips and how it helps makes a difference to school. It was a wonderful experience."  -Susan P.

  • "I think that this photo epitomizes the reach of Neil's inanimate arms, the bonds that his companions have made with truly good people all around the world. Personally, my experience in Peru made me feel as though there is an intrinsic bond between all members of the human race. I really like this picture, because Neil is very literally depicted as a connection between two people, between two worlds - showing that we are all one people, living in one world, no matter how far apart we are at any given moment."  -Matthew H.

Congratulations again to all of the contest entrants and finalists. We really enjoyed seeing all the photos from your educational travels abroad. Thank you all for participating!
