Educated-Traveler-World-Food-Day-2011-Antipasto-Cart

There are many important elements to truly experiencing a new culture when you’re traveling, and food is definitely one of them. Personally, it’s one of my favorite things about traveling. Whether it’s haggis in Edinburgh, cuy in Peru or pizza in Naples, every culture has a dish (or several!) they’re known for, just waiting to be devoured by hungry travelers. TV shows like Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations and Andrew Zimmerman’s Bizarre Foods, pay respect to this essential travel experience, by uncovering local flavors around the world and sharing them with us back home. I don’t know about you, but I sit in front of the TV salivating whenever I watch. Did you see the episode of No Reservations in the Philippines where they stuffed a pig with heaps of fresh vegetables and roasted it on an open fire? I was about to book a flight after that show!

Ok, enough of that, I'm getting hungry! The point is these shows emphasize how important it is to try the cuisine while you’re traveling; it not only broadens our horizons, but allows us to make connections with the people and gives us a better understanding of the history and culture behind the food. And in the melting pot we call the US, it allows us to bring some of these recipes home and recreate them in our own kitchens and restaurants.

All week long we’ll be celebrating food in honor of World Food Day on October 16th. As we recognize various cultures and their cuisines, I encourage you to please share a recipe of your own, a food experience you’ve had or just tell me about the best thing you’ve eaten on your travels!

Bon Appétit! Buen Provecho! Guten Appetit! Buon Appetito!
