Trendy foodies & Educated Travelers will love this restaurant idea that’s been “popping up” worldwide.  As the name insinuates, pop up restaurants literally pop up in interesting and often unconventional locations, remaining open only for a short period, anywhere from one night to several weeks.

This innovative dining concept has been taken to new heights in Frankfurt, Germany. The founder of PRET A DINER (French for “ready for dinner”), Klaus Peter Kofler, has created exclusive, invitation-only pop up restaurants (experiences) in London, Berlin and Munich as well. One of his recent creations, The Tree House claims to be the world’s highest pop up. He’s transformed the top two levels of a Frankfurt skyscraper into a unique dining experience “close to the stars” – food is presented by chefs decorated with Michelin star ratings – Germany is second only to France in its number of Michelin stars, and served close to the stars themselves – over 400 feet into the sky, overlooking the city.

The Tree House restaurant has been a large success. Opening on September 8th, the very next day 3,000 people had already secured reservations. The Tree House will close in less than two weeks on October 22nd – one week after originally scheduled.

PRET A DINER’s first creation, The Melting Pot was unveiled last winter in a former coin mint in Berlin. It served 10,000 guests in the 45 days it was open. The Minotaur opened its doors just two days ago in the Old Vic Tunnels in London, England. Here, diners enjoy a three course menu amongst international artists’ interpretations of the Greek myth, The Minotaur.

Plans for new restaurant experiences in Munich and Berlin are next. Like PRET A DINER on Facebook so the "where" and "when" of their next restaurant will pop up in your newsfeed. Perhaps you'll be able to pop in on your next journey abroad – but be sure to reserve your table ahead of time!

Suggested Discussion Questions for Your Classroom:
  • If you could create a pop up restaurant experience anywhere, where would you open your restaurant and what would your concept be?
  • How would you decorate the restaurant?
  • What would your menu include?
  • Would you focus on cuisine from another country, or keep it local?
