Teach Through Educational Travel: Casa Milá, Barcelona, Spain

Casa Milá, Barcelona, Spain

Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi completely changed the face of architecture in Spain – and the world. He focused his energy on creating organic, natural structures that surprise and delight the viewer. His most famous building is Sagrada Familia, a cathedral in Barcelona. But the Casa Milá is pretty special –a residential building (commissioned by businessman Pedro Milá), built from 1906-1910, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Gaudi museum. This lesson will focus on videos and images of Casa Milá, since a visual component is critical to understanding this extraordinary Modernist building

Download a larger image and share the photo with your class, then try these discussion questions and classroom activities:

  • In the Casa Milá, there are no right angles! Imagine designing a building with no right angles or straight lines. How would you accomplish this (especially when using stone)? Look at these photos of the exterior and interior of Casa Milá to help fuel your imagination.

  • Watch this video with your class to learn about the history of Casa Milá.

  • Now, look closely at the details of Casa Milá. It has an ocean theme – how many features can you find in Casa Milá that fit this theme?
